Ionospheric Energy Input in Response to Changes in Solar Wind Driving: Statistics From the SuperDARN and AMPERE Campaigns

For over a decade, the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network and Active Magnetosphere Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment have been measuring ionospheric convection field-aligned currents in high-latitude regions, respectively. Using both, maps of magnetosphere-ionosphere energy transfer rate (the Poynting flux) generated with time resolution 2 min between 2010 2017. These data driven flux (PF) patterns are used this study to perform superposed epoch analysis northern hemisphere response transitions interplanetary magnetic field Bz component, upwards 60° geomagnetic latitude. We discuss difference distribution PF Dungey cycle “switching on” off” solar wind driving, revealing that they not symmetric temporally or spatially.
